Currently, the summit of Mount Rausu experiences a temperature of minus 1 degree Celsius, with a feels-like temperature of minus 4.2 degrees Celsius. There is a significant temperature difference of over 8 degrees compared to the base. The daytime forecast indicates calm, cloudy skies with no precipitation, but temperatures will hover around freezing. Winds are expected to remain light throughout the day, minimizing the wind chill factor. However, climbers should always be aware of the potential for sudden dense fog and rapid weather changes, a common characteristic of the Shiretoko mountain range due to sea winds.
In late June, it is highly probable that remnant snow patches, or "sekkai," persist in higher elevations along the Iwaobetsu Course and Rausu Course, particularly in shaded gullies. Even with daytime temperatures, these snow patches may not melt significantly and can refreeze overnight. Exposed rocky sections and damp rock faces also pose a freezing risk. Therefore, carrying lightweight crampons or microspikes and trekking poles is strongly recommended. Exercise extreme caution to prevent slips and falls.
Layering for cold conditions is crucial. Wear a quick-drying synthetic or merino wool base layer, a fleece or light down jacket for your mid-layer, and a waterproof-breathable shell for your outer layer. During breaks, add an insulating down jacket to prevent hypothermia. Gloves and a warm hat are essential. Managing your body temperature during activity is key to mitigating the risk of hypothermia.
Temperatures will drop significantly again from evening into night, potentially reaching around minus 3 degrees Celsius near the summit. Plan to complete your activities before sunset. As this is a brown bear habitat, remember to utilize food lockers and carry bear deterrents.
