Conditions generally good — Conduct standard mountain safety measures
Ken-ga-mine currently enjoys clear skies with visibility exceeding 20 kilometers. The summit temperature is 3.4 degrees Celsius, feeling like -0.2 degrees Celsius due to a gentle wind. A significant temperature difference of 5.6 degrees Celsius exists between the summit and the base, necessitating robust cold weather preparation. Temperatures are forecast to rise during the day, reaching 7.2 degrees Celsius by noon. However, a light drizzle is expected by 3 PM with a 92% chance of precipitation, requiring vigilance for changing weather conditions.
The ground condition is a mix of remaining snow (7cm reported) and exposed rock ridges. Particularly on the lock-equipped sections of Betsuzan-one and Hayatsuki-one, and the critical Kani-no-Tatebai and Kani-no-Yokobai, frozen remnants of snow may persist in shaded areas and rock crevices. This, combined with wet rock surfaces from the afternoon drizzle, significantly increases the risk of slipping and falling. Helmets are mandatory, and carrying chain spikes or lightweight crampons is strongly recommended. Rain gear is also essential.
For layering, a quick-drying base layer, a mid-layer such as fleece, and a waterproof-breathable outer shell are fundamental. Adjustments should be made frequently to adapt to changing perceived temperatures. As morning perceived temperatures can be below freezing, start with adequate insulation and add a light down jacket during stops. While the risk of thunderstorms is low, consider that afternoon drizzle might reduce visibility. It is prudent to pass critical sections early in the day.
The weather is expected to clear up in the evening, but temperatures will drop again, approaching 0 degrees Celsius overnight. Plan your descent and rest at a safe location before nightfall.
