Warning — High risk conditions, expert level only
Today on Mount Shirouma, the summit is experiencing rain with a temperature of 2.9 degrees Celsius, feeling like minus 1 degree Celsius. Gusts are forecast to reach 27.8 meters per second by 9 AM. This combination of strong winds and rain makes any activity on the ridges extremely dangerous. We strongly advise against attempting to reach Shirouma Dake summit today.
The Daisekkei (Great Snow Valley) is wet from the rain, posing a significant risk of slipping. Even in summer, light crampons are typically recommended for this section, but the rain and low temperatures will make the surface even slicker. Although the snow depth is only 2 centimeters, caution is required for potential post-holing on the snowfield. Visibility is also poor at 1.6 kilometers, increasing the risk of getting lost in case of dense fog.
The combination of wet conditions and strong winds drastically elevates the risk of hypothermia. Waterproof and breathable outerwear, insulating layers such as fleece or light down, waterproof gloves, and a waterproof hat are essential. The summit temperature of 2.9 degrees Celsius is more than 10 degrees colder than the base temperature of 13 degrees Celsius. This significant temperature difference must not be underestimated.
While the rain is expected to lighten to drizzle in the afternoon and cease by evening, temperatures will remain low. The perceived temperature will stay below freezing throughout the day, necessitating thorough cold weather preparation even for day trips. However, the extreme gusts forecast for this morning are life-threatening, and we assess that it is a day to refrain from any mountain activities for safety.
