Warning — High risk conditions, expert level only
Currently, Mt. Ontake summit is experiencing rain with a temperature of 5.3°C, feeling like 2.8°C. Temperatures are forecasted to remain around 5.2°C throughout the day, with continuous heavy rain and drizzle. South-southwesterly gusts are expected to reach over 23m/s by late morning.
Hiking trails are thoroughly wet due to recent and ongoing rainfall. The white volcanic scree slopes above the tree line are particularly slippery, with many loose rocks. Muddy conditions are also prevalent. Current visibility is 1.6km, but it is expected to worsen further with rain and fog, potentially leading to near whiteout conditions around the crater lakes.
The wind chill factor will keep the effective temperature around 0°C throughout the day, posing a very high risk of hypothermia. Waterproof and breathable rain gear (jacket and pants), insulating layers, waterproof gloves, and a hat are essential. It is crucial to manage perspiration during activity, as wet clothing rapidly drains body heat. Frequent breaks, changing into dry clothes, and warm beverages are recommended. Sturdy hiking boots with excellent grip are advised. While microspikes are not necessary, carrying a helmet is strongly recommended, drawing lessons from the 2014 eruption disaster.
Hiking is not recommended today. Approaching Kengamine or the crater lakes is extremely hazardous due to poor visibility, strong winds, slippery ground, and the high risk of hypothermia. If you must venture out, stay on trails below the tree line and consider an early turnaround. Rain and drizzle are expected to continue into the evening, with no significant improvement in visibility.
