Summit conditions for Mount Rausu today show temperatures hovering around freezing, currently -2°C with a feel of -5.6°C. The morning will see cloudy skies gradually clearing to mostly sunny by midday, with temperatures reaching up to 2°C at the peak. However, higher elevations will remain prone to freezing conditions.

While snow depth is reported at 0cm, residual snow patches are likely to persist in shaded areas and along rocky ridges, particularly on sections of the Iwaobetsu Course and in stream valleys. These patches may be frozen due to the sub-zero temperatures. Carrying light crampons or microspikes is advised for cautious travel.

Layering is crucial given the wind chill factor keeping perceived temperatures around -5°C. A three-layer system including a wicking base layer, insulating mid-layer (fleece or light down), and a waterproof/breathable outer shell is essential. Gloves and a warm hat are also necessary. Gusts reaching up to 7.8m/s are not severe but exposed ridges will feel colder.

A slight drizzle is forecast around 6 PM, with temperatures dropping back below freezing. This increases the risk of hypothermia if clothing becomes wet. Early descent is recommended. Be aware of the potential for sudden cooling winds on exposed ridges with coastal views, and remember to utilize food lockers due to the bear habitat.
