The summit area of Mt. Rausu is currently shrouded in dense fog, with visibility below 1 kilometer. The perceived temperature is near minus 5 degrees Celsius, and it will remain below freezing throughout the day. Gusts on the ridge, reaching up to 10.3 m/s, pose a risk of losing balance. The significant temperature difference between the summit and the base indicates conditions become much harsher with increasing elevation.

Today, especially on the higher sections of the Iwaobetsu and Rausu courses, expect a dangerous mix of hard-packed remaining snow and ice. With temperatures hovering around or below freezing, snowfields are likely to be firm and extremely slippery, presenting a high risk of uncontrolled falls. Full crampons and an ice axe are essential for any ascent; microspikes will not provide adequate safety.

Dense fog is forecast to persist throughout the day, with no significant improvement in visibility. This poor visibility makes terrain identification extremely difficult, rendering routes like the Shiretoko Mountain Range Traverse exceptionally hazardous. Any attempt to push forward in these conditions risks hypothermia, disorientation, or severe injury from snowfield falls.

Temperatures will further drop to below minus 5 degrees Celsius from evening onwards. If you must be out, carry multiple layers of insulating clothing in addition to waterproof and windproof shells. As this is a brown bear habitat, a food locker and bear spray are also critical. Summit attempts are strongly not recommended today.
