Warning — High risk conditions, expert level only
Hakusan summit is currently experiencing active snowfall and strong winds, with a wind chill of -11.6°C and visibility below 1km. Light snow is expected to continue until around 9 AM, after which conditions are forecast to clear to sunny skies. However, temperatures will remain below freezing throughout the day, requiring thorough cold weather preparation and appropriate layering. Base layers should be moisture-wicking, mid-layers fleece or light down, and outer layers waterproof breathable shells, with extra insulation packed.
A High Wind Gust Risk is currently in effect, with gusts up to 25.2 m/s recorded and sustained gusts over 20 m/s expected during the day. On exposed alpine areas such as the ridge leading to Gozenmine, there is an extremely high risk of falling or being blown over. Minimize time spent on these exposed ridges and maintain a low, stable posture when traversing them to mitigate severe accident risks. While the base experiences heavy drizzle, a significant 9.4°C temperature difference to the summit indicates increasing severity with altitude.
Ground conditions consist of mixed old and new snow, with wind-packed surfaces and icy sections prevalent due to the strong winds. Snowfields on main routes like the Sabo Shindo are particularly slippery during this residual snow season. Crampons and an ice axe are absolutely essential for safe travel. Waterproof breathable outerwear, thick insulating mid-layers, waterproof gloves, a warm hat, and goggles are critical to prevent hypothermia in these severe conditions. Lightning risk is low, but strong winds pose a significant hypothermia threat.
While the afternoon will bring clear skies, temperatures will drop further to around -8°C overnight, making the snow surface harden considerably. Therefore, extra caution for
