Conditions generally good — Conduct standard mountain safety measures
Mount Shari will experience intermittent light rain or drizzle from morning through the day. Summit temperatures hover around 14 degrees Celsius, but high humidity and wet conditions will make it feel colder. A temperature difference of about 5 degrees exists between the summit and base. While the perceived temperature is close to the actual temperature, getting wet will significantly lower it. Carry a quick-drying base layer, a thin fleece as a mid-layer, and a waterproof-breathable rain shell as an outer layer.
All trails are generally wet and slippery. Particularly on the Kyudo (Old Route) river course, the continuous waterfalls and wet rock faces pose a high risk of slipping and falling. Concentrated focus on foot placement is essential. Visibility is limited to 1.8 kilometers, making the anticipated view of the Okhotsk Sea from the Shindo (New Route) ridge unlikely. The ground is muddy, and rocks and tree roots are extremely slick. Crampons or microspikes are not needed, but waterproof hiking boots are essential.
While thunder and strong winds are not major concerns, the persistent drizzle and poor visibility elevate the risk of hypothermia due to getting wet. Carrying quick-drying base layers, insulating mid-layers, and waterproof-breathable rain gear is crucial to staying dry. A cautious assessment of go/no-go is required for today's conditions. Avoid pushing forward in poor visibility and make a prompt decision to turn back if weather worsens or your condition changes.
A brief period of heavier showers is forecast around 6 PM. Any activity after sunset will face increased risks from darkness, wet ground, and cooling temperatures. Nighttime travel further exacerbates visibility issues, making the risk of slipping on the Kyudo river course immeasurable. Early termination of your ascent is strongly recommended.
