Hakuba Peak is cloudy this morning with limited visibility of 1.1km at the summit. The temperature difference from the base is 10°C, making the summit feel like a chilly 0.8°C. This combination of low temperature, high humidity, and wind will make conditions feel even harsher. A wicking base layer, a fleece or softshell mid-layer, and waterproof breathable hard shell outerwear (top and bottom) are essential. Carry an insulating layer like a down jacket for breaks.

Ground conditions show melting snow. The Daisekkei (Great Snow Valley), one of Japan's three great snow valleys, poses increased risks of punching through soft snow and rockfall. While light crampons are generally required here even in summer, be extra cautious of the softening surface due to rising temperatures and rain, especially above Hakuba-jiri. Rocky sections will be wet and slippery, requiring careful foot placement.

Winds from the southeast will strengthen this afternoon, with gusts up to 16.8m/s expected by 3 PM. Travel on exposed ridges will likely be challenging. Light rain is forecast from 6 PM, intensifying into heavy mist by 9 PM and proper rain by midnight, with precipitation probability reaching 80%. This significantly increases the risk of hypothermia due to wetness, so waterproof and breathable rain gear (top and bottom) is absolutely essential. Do not forget gloves and a hat.

Limited visibility also heightens the risk of getting lost. The beautiful alpine flowers on the ridges will be difficult to appreciate under these conditions. Avoid pushing too hard and be prepared to turn back early if conditions deteriorate.
