Mount Meakan is experiencing light drizzle this morning, with a summit apparent temperature of 7.5°C. The humidity is extremely high at 98%, which can lead to a rapid drop in body temperature if you get wet. Visibility is poor, below 1km, making navigation challenging, especially around the crater lakes and fumarole areas where the risk of getting lost or encountering dangerous sulfur gas increases.

The ground will remain wet and muddy throughout the day. The loose scree slopes on the Onneto Course are particularly slippery due to the drizzle, demanding cautious footing to prevent falls. Thunderstorms are forecast for 3 PM, posing a high risk of lightning strikes on the exposed summit area of this active volcano. An early descent to a safe location before this time is strongly advised.

Essential gear includes quick-drying base layers, a fleece mid-layer, and a waterproof-breathable outer shell. Gloves and a hat are also recommended. While crampons or microspikes are not necessary, waterproof hiking boots are crucial. Prioritize an early start and plan to conclude your ascent and begin your descent well before the afternoon thunderstorms. Light showers will continue into the evening, with temperatures dropping further.
