Conditions generally good — Conduct standard mountain safety measures
Mt. Chokai is experiencing a clear and calm morning. The summit temperature is 5.9 degrees Celsius, with a feels-like temperature of 2.4 degrees Celsius, indicating a chilly start. However, temperatures are expected to rise to a mild 11 degrees Celsius during the day, accompanied by light winds, making for ideal climbing conditions. Visibility is excellent, promising superb panoramic views, including the distant Japan Sea.
The mountain trails are currently free of snow, predominantly exhibiting exposed rock ridges and dry conditions. However, be mindful of occasional wet or muddy sections, especially in shaded areas, requiring careful foot placement. While the rock formations around Shinzan, the highest peak and a lava dome, are generally stable, cautious navigation is advised when traversing this rocky terrain. For essential layering, carry a quick-drying base layer, a warm mid-layer such as fleece or a light down jacket, and a windproof and waterproof outer shell. Full waterproof rain gear (jacket and pants) is also an absolute necessity. Crampons or microspikes are not required for current conditions.
The weather is forecast to shift to partly cloudy around 6 PM, becoming fully cloudy overnight. The primary concern is the escalating wind, with gusts potentially exceeding 13 meters per second after 9 PM and over 15 meters per second by midnight. Strong winds originating from the Japan Sea are particularly pronounced on Mt. Chokai, given its status as an isolated peak. For those traversing the long ridge routes, a safe descent well before sunset is strongly recommended to avoid exposure to these increasing winds and dropping temperatures. Overnight, temperatures will fall to around 4 degrees Celsius, significantly increasing the risk of hypothermia. Plan your itinerary to ensure
