Today, Hakuba-dake summit will experience clear skies and abundant sunshine throughout the day. The temperature will rise from 0°C at 7:30 AM to 4.4°C by noon, with a comfortable feel-like temperature remaining above freezing. Winds will be light all day, with gusts peaking around 9.6 m/s, posing no significant challenge to movement. Snow depth is 136 cm, indicating late-season snow conditions. The rising daytime temperatures will soften the snow surface, making walking easier, but early mornings and shaded areas may still have firm snow.
During this period on Hakuba-dake, especially on the Daisekkei route from Sarukura to Hakuba-jiri and towards the summit, the risk of rockfall increases due to rising temperatures. As the snow softens in the afternoon, there's a higher chance of slipping, so light crampons (6-point or more) and an ice axe are essential. Be mindful of post-holing on snowfields and choose your route carefully. Exposed rock ridges will also become more prevalent on the main ridge, requiring hikers to adapt to mixed terrain of summer trail and residual snow.
While the feel-like temperature will be above freezing during the day, it was -3.3°C in the early morning and will drop back below freezing by evening. For layering, a base layer, thin fleece, and waterproof breathable shell should suffice for active periods. However, always carry an insulating layer like a lightweight down jacket for breaks or prolonged stops. Although the risk of thunderstorms and strong winds is low, take precautions against hypothermia by bringing gloves and a hat.
Overall, today is suitable for mountaineering, but late-season alpine conditions demand adequate equipment and experienced judgment. An early start is recommended as the snow will further soften in the afternoon.
