Today, Zao Renpo presents a stark contrast between the base and the summit. While the foothills enjoy clear skies, visibility at the summit is already less than 1km. Although the morning will see moderate winds, drizzle is expected to begin around 3 PM, with precipitation increasing into the night. The current summit temperature is 13.4°C, but the perceived temperature could drop to single digits in the afternoon, increasing the risk of hypothermia in conjunction with poor visibility.
The exposed ridgeline from Karita-dake to Kumano-dake and Jizo-san offers no shelter, making navigation extremely challenging and increasing the risk of getting lost in poor visibility. With the afternoon drizzle, the ground will turn wet and muddy, making rocky sections and steep slopes slippery. Extreme caution is advised for foot placement.
The perceived temperature will remain in the low teens during the day, dropping to around 9°C by evening. The risk of hypothermia is elevated due to the drizzle and high humidity. Waterproof and breathable outer layers are essential, and supplemental insulation such as a lightweight down jacket or fleece should be carried for breaks or worsening weather. Crampons and microspikes are not needed, but waterproof hiking boots, a map, compass, and GPS are mandatory. Despite easy tourist access, avoid careless actions.
While wind speeds, with gusts up to 8.7 m/s, do not pose a strong wind risk, poor visibility and getting wet from the drizzle will significantly restrict movement. It is strongly recommended to start your descent earlier than planned and reach a safe zone before the weather deteriorates further.
