Conditions generally good — Conduct standard mountain safety measures
As of 7:00 AM, the summit of Mt. Asahidake is partly cloudy with a temperature of 10.8°C, feeling like 10.5°C. There is a 3°C difference compared to the base. Light rain is expected to come and go throughout the day, with a stronger drizzle predicted between noon and 3:00 PM. Although the wind will remain light all day, the high humidity of 94% means that getting wet will significantly lower the perceived temperature. Mt. Asahidake, the highest peak in Hokkaido, presents a risk of low temperatures even in summer, and today's conditions are a prime example.
The mountain trails will be wet due to the drizzle and high humidity, with many muddy sections. The hiking trail from the Ropeway Sugatami Station to the summit, in particular, has many rocky areas and wooden paths that will be slippery, requiring careful footing. Waterproof and breathable rainwear (jacket and pants) is essential, along with waterproof hiking boots. Carrying trekking poles is also recommended for balance on slippery terrain.
With temperatures in the low 10s and continuous drizzle, the risk of hypothermia increases. A three-layer system is fundamental: a quick-drying base layer, a warm mid-layer, and a waterproof-breathable outer shell. It is also advisable to carry a spare mid-layer in case your clothing gets wet. Current visibility is 1.1 km, but it may worsen with the drizzle, increasing the chance of being enveloped in fog. To avoid getting lost, especially around the fumarole area (Jigokudani), constantly check your footing and surroundings, and proceed with caution. The risk of lightning and strong winds is low, but in conditions of poor visibility, it is crucial to make the wise decision to turn back if necessary.
Light drizzle will persist into the evening, and temperatures will drop further overnight, reaching 9.7°C by early tomorrow morning. Nighttime activity should be avoided.
