Rausu-dake conditions this morning show a transition from cloudy to mostly clear skies. The summit temperature is currently 12.4°C, expected to rise to the mid-16s°C during the day. Wind speeds will remain light throughout the day, with maximum gusts around 5.5m/s, making the felt temperature relatively mild during activity. Visibility is excellent, exceeding 20km, offering superb coastal views from the Shiretoko Peninsula's highest peak.
Ground conditions are generally dry due to no precipitation, but humid sections and some muddy areas may persist, especially within the forested zones of the Rausu and Iwaobetsu trails. Hikers should exercise caution on potentially slippery rocks. No residual snow is reported, so crampons or microspikes are not necessary. However, a waterproof and breathable rain gear set is essential, serving also as an outer insulating layer against the elements.
As Rausu-dake is prime brown bear habitat, carrying a bear bell, bear spray, and utilizing food lockers at designated points are imperative for safety. While the immediate risk of low body temperature is minimal during active hours due to mild winds and moderate temperatures, after sunset, temperatures will drop to the low 10s°C. Therefore, adequate insulating layers are crucial to prevent hypothermia during any prolonged stops or overnight stays. Thunderstorm and strong wind risks remain low for the entire day.
