The white volcanic gravel slopes above the tree line are dry and easy to traverse. Given Mount Ontake is an active volcano, carrying a helmet is always recommended. Even under these favorable conditions, do not neglect essential gear in preparation for any unforeseen circumstances.

For layering, a quick-drying base layer, a mid-layer such as fleece, and a windproof and waterproof outer shell are essential. While a mid-layer may suffice during activity, an outer shell should be used during breaks or in exposed windy areas to prevent hypothermia. Although no precipitation is forecast, always carry rain gear, considering the possibility of sudden weather changes in the mountains. The risk of hypothermia is low, but being prepared with an outer shell ensures safety. The risks of lightning and strong winds are deemed low throughout the day.
