Ground conditions will be entirely wet due to continuous rain, with significant muddy sections in places. Even on well-maintained routes like the Makinoto Pass course, wet rocks and wooden paths will be slippery, increasing the risk of falls. While crampons or microspikes are not necessary, waterproof and breathable rain gear (jacket and pants) and waterproof hiking boots are essential. Carrying gloves that retain warmth when wet is also advisable.
Visibility is poor at 2.2 km, and fog is likely to develop. On exposed summit areas such as Mount Nakadake and Mount Kuju, strong winds combined with fog could lead to near whiteout conditions, significantly increasing the risk of getting lost, a specific hazard in the Kuju Mountains. The combination of strong winds and wet conditions poses a high risk of hypothermia, making any strenuous activity ill-advised.
Weather conditions are forecast to deteriorate from afternoon into the evening. An early decision to turn back and descend is strongly recommended. For layering at 1759.75m with a felt temperature of 13.3°C, use a moisture-wicking synthetic or merino wool base layer, a thin fleece for a mid-layer, and waterproof, breathable rain gear (jacket and pants) as an outer layer. Carry a light down or synthetic insulation jacket for breaks or worsening conditions.
