しかし午後は降水確率が上昇し、夕方からは霧雨の予報が出ている。地面は積雪がなく岩稜が露出している状態だが、湿度が高く、日陰や沢筋ではウェットな箇所も予想される。行動中の体感気温は10℃から14℃程度となるため、速乾性ベースレイヤーの上にフリースなどのミドルレイヤー、そして防水透湿性のアウターシェル上下を必ず携行すること。休憩時や悪天候に備え、薄手のダウンジャケットも有効だ。
強風や雷のリスクは低いが、谷川岳は気象急変の特性を持つ山域。特にトマの耳・オキの耳の双耳峰周辺では、午後の湿潤な空気と降水確率上昇により、一時的に濃霧が発生し視界不良となる可能性もある。濃霧によるルートロストに十分警戒し、地図とコンパス、GPSの準備を怠らないこと。
山頂への到着は午前中の早い時間帯を目標とし、遅くとも午後には下山を開始する計画とすべきだ。午後の天候悪化に備え、早めの行動を心がけてほしい。

群馬県と新潟県の県境にそびえる標高1,977mの山。「魔の山」と呼ばれた歴史を持ち、累計遭難死者数が世界最多とされる山として知られる。トマの耳・オキの耳の双耳峰が特徴的。
特徴・地形 Features
一ノ倉沢・幽ノ沢・マチガ沢など急峻な岩壁を抱える東面はクライマーの聖地。山頂付近は森林限界を超え笹原と岩場が広がる。日本海・太平洋側の気候境界に位置し、気象変化が極めて激しい。
ベストシーズン Best Season
6月〜10月が一般登山シーズン。冬期はラッセル・雪崩・雪庇のリスクが高く、熟練者向け。

天神尾根（ロープウェイ利用・最も一般的）、西黒尾根（日本三大急登）、巌剛新道、馬蹄形縦走。
