Mount Zao summit is currently mostly clear, with a temperature of 10.1°C and a feels-like temperature of 8.3°C. The daytime forecast shows a transition from partly cloudy to clear skies, with temperatures expected to reach a high of 15.4°C around 3 PM. However, humidity remains high at 95%, and visibility is somewhat limited at 1.1km. Along the ridge line from Katta-dake to Mount Kumano, westerly winds are expected to bring gusts up to 13.4m/s from morning to noon. This could lead to a further decrease in the feels-like temperature on exposed ridges.
Ground conditions are anticipated to be generally wet to muddy due to high humidity and rising temperatures, even without precipitation. Slippery sections are likely, especially in shaded areas and where water accumulates. Crampons or microspikes are not necessary. Essential gear includes waterproof and breathable rainwear (jacket and pants). For layering, wear a quick-drying long-sleeve base layer, a thin fleece jacket as a mid-layer, and a rain jacket as an outer shell. Gloves and a hat are also crucial.
While the risk of thunderstorms is low, be vigilant for potential fog and reduced visibility caused by high humidity. Around Okama Crater Lake, in addition to the presence of tourists, the risk of getting lost in fog should be considered. Always carry a map, compass, or GPS. Winds will subside towards evening, but temperatures will drop to around 9°C. Even for a day trip, do not neglect adequate cold weather preparation.
