Today at Sapporo Teine, conditions are highly unstable with heavy thunderstorms expected throughout the day. From approximately 9 AM to 3 PM, strong thunderstorms will persist, bringing significant rainfall. Summit temperatures will hover around 10.7 degrees Celsius, with a perceived temperature of 10.3 degrees Celsius, but getting wet will rapidly decrease the perceived temperature. There is also about a 3-degree Celsius difference in temperature between the summit and the base, making the summit area colder. The ground will become muddy due to light drizzle and thunderstorms, significantly increasing the risk of slipping, especially on the steep slopes of the Highland Zone. Visibility will also be severely reduced during the thunderstorms, making navigation difficult.

Lightning is one of the most dangerous meteorological phenomena in the mountains. If you hear thunder or see lightning, evacuate to a safe location immediately. Avoid exposed ridges and open areas at all costs. While current wind speeds are low at 0.47 meters per second, be aware of sudden gusts accompanying the thunderstorms. Essential layering includes a moisture-wicking base layer, a thin fleece as a mid-layer, and waterproof and breathable rainwear for the outer layer. Waterproof hiking boots, a hat, and gloves are crucial to prevent hypothermia.

Given the forecast for heavy thunderstorms, any mountaineering or entry into the Highland Zone today is extremely dangerous, and canceling your plans is the wisest decision. While the weather is expected to improve to light drizzle by 6 PM and mostly clear by 9 PM, with overnight temperatures dropping to around 5 degrees Celsius, the severe daytime risks strongly advise against any activity.
