As of 8 AM, the summit of Mt. Asahidake is cloudy with a temperature of 12.4°C, feeling like 11.9°C. Winds are light. However, the base is already experiencing light drizzle. Throughout the morning, light drizzle is expected at the summit, with temperatures rising to 14.8°C by noon. The forecast indicates a shift to thunderstorms by 3 PM, accompanied by a temperature drop to 12.6°C. Light drizzle will continue, and temperatures are predicted to fall sharply to 7°C overnight.
Hiking trails today will likely be muddy due to continuous rainfall. Especially around the alpine plant colonies, boardwalks and dirt paths will be slippery, necessitating waterproof hiking boots with good traction. On the route from Sugatami Station to the summit, exposed rocky sections will also be wet and treacherous, requiring careful footing. Near the fumerole groups (Jigokudani), the risk of exposure to toxic gases and hot springs increases during poor visibility, demanding extra caution.
As indicated by the automated risk assessment, a rapid temperature drop of 6°C is expected during the forecast period. Combined with the afternoon thunderstorms, the apparent temperature will feel even lower, posing a high risk of hypothermia. A quick-drying base layer, a thick fleece mid-layer, and a waterproof-breathable shell as an outer layer are essential. Carry extra insulating layers to prepare for getting wet. If thunder is heard, immediately seek shelter away from exposed areas like Sugatami-no-ike pond and the ridges. Early starts and prompt turnarounds are strongly recommended, as prolonged activity is not advisable under these conditions.
